Many people who work from home know that staying focused can be difficult. It’s easy to get distracted by the pile of laundry or the kids running around. By the end of the day, you didn’t accomplish much in the way of your work.
Here are some tips you can easily implement to become more productive while working from home.
Stay on schedule
Find a schedule that works for you. Maybe you’re a morning person or you work better in the early afternoon or night. Find a schedule of work that works for you and stick to it.
Put yourself into a mindset that you’re working from an office and you’re sticking to your set schedule. Work hard during your most productive time of day and do the laundry later!
Sure, you’re working from home and no one will see that you’re still in your PJs, but you’ll know it!
Make it a point to get dressed every morning. Getting dressed tricks your mind into thinking you’re going somewhere…and you are….to work in your office.
Getting dressed doesn’t mean a suit and tie. Just jeans and a t-shirt will do. Just not the pajamas.
Do your regular morning routine. Take a shower, put on your makeup, do your hair, whatever you need to do to feel prepared to take on the day and you’ll be ready to work.
Plan your day
Have a plan for each day. This will help you keep focused and on track. Keep a notebook on your desk where you can list all the tasks you need to complete that day. At the end of the day, transfer any tasks that you didn’t get done to the next day and spend a few minutes writing all the tasks you need to accomplish the next day.
With your day planned, you can get right down to work immediately. You won’t need to spend time trying to figure out what you should be doing.
Ignore social media
Nothing sucks you in faster than a ‘quick’ check of Facebook. Turn off your social media while you’re working. You can see what your friend had for lunch when your workday is through.
Schedule time to check email
Checking email can be as distracting as social media. A study finds that people check their email an average of 74 times a day. What a great way to get unfocused!
Set specific times in the morning and afternoon to check and answer your email. This will allow you to concentrate on your work and be more productive.
Take a break
Stepping away from your office and taking a break can be a good thing. Get that cup of coffee, do 5 minutes of meditation, or take a brisk 15-minute walk. These are all things that will have you returning to work refreshed.
Have a dedicated workspace
Have a space in your home that is dedicated to your work. It doesn’t have to be an entire room. This space should only be used for your work. It is easier to resist doing other things around the house when you’re in your ‘office.’
When you work from home, other people seem to think you have all day to run errands, cook meals, do laundry, go out for lunch or golf. Flexible time as a small business owner may allow you to play golf occasionally, but you need to set boundaries with family and neighbors. Just because you’re home, you’re not available to watch someone child, gossip, or hang out.
Work someplace else
Occasionally, we all need a change of scenery. Try working one day a week at a local coffee shop or the library. These places all have free WiFi.
Leaving your home and working someplace else can energize you. You might even meet your next client at a coffee shop!
