You’ve heard the phrase ‘don’t judge a book by its cover,’ right? Well, whoever coined that phrase obviously never heard of Facebook!

Your Facebook cover photo is often an overlooked, but very important, visual marketing tool. A good cover photo can help tell your brand’s story.

Size matters

When dealing with social media images, size does matter! According to Facebook, your cover photo displays at 820 pixels wide x 312 pixels tall on desktops and 640 pixels wide x 360 pixels tall o smartphones. Naturally, you want to check to see how your image looks on both a desktop and smartphone to make sure your image is chopped off.

Choosing your cover photo

Your profile picture is a small space but your cover photo space is where you can really show off what your brand is all about.

Here are some ways you can use your cover photo:

  • Promote your products: show off current and soon-to-be-released products. Facebook has recently allowed brands to add videos to their cover photos so you might want to put in a short video of how your product works.

  • Promote your latest campaign: if you have a new promotion or contest/giveaway, use your cover photo as a promotional tool.

  • Change with the seasons: Celebrate holidays, the changing seasons, or other fun calendar events in your cover photo.

  • Promote your clients: If you have some great, loyal customers, why not showcase them?

Free tools to create your own Facebook cover photo

Luckily for small businesses that don’t have an on-staff marketing expert, there are some great, free tools available to help you create a fantastic Facebook cover photo. Here are some of my favorites:

Canva: www.canva.com

Canva has pre-set sizes for all your social media platforms, not just Facebook, so your covers and other images come out perfect every time.

Picscatter: www.picscatter.com

Do you want to create a collage as your cover photo? Picscatter can help you easily create a great collage. Picscatter does not have pre-set sized templates, so you must bring the correct sized images to this software platform.

Timeline Cover Banner: www.timelinecoverbanner.com

This site is super easy to use. You can upload any image and the software converts it into a perfect cover photo. You can customize your image with text.

It’s time you created a branded Facebook cover photo!
